I was doing my usual facebook surfing and came across some photos of my dear friend, Clarissa Lui of Custom Chic and her attendance at last year’s annual RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur Awards, which is taking place at the end of November, 2010. This piqued my interest as I’ve been privileged enough to meet several successful women during my WOT journey and wanted to submit numerous nomination forms (but was unable to). It’s difficult to decide who deserves the recognition the most because we’re all fighting our own battles and exceeding expectations in our own ways. I urge you to visit their website to nominate successful entrepreneurial women that you may know, so that they may continue to make an impression in our communities.

TRUE PASSION NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE
TORONTO • JUNE 10, 2009

Success in the brand name retail business takes a lot more than style, and Bonnie Brooks has shown the world that she has the energy, drive and passion to prove it. Building on a storied career managing prestige brands and renowned retail operations around the world, Bonnie is now poised to transform The Bay from a department store into a destination. Her milestones along the way? Only the most sought after retail brands, including Holt Renfrew, Harvey Nichols and Lane Crawford, as well as editor-in-chief for Flare. In her most recent role, Bonnie had her finger on the pulse of globalization, managing the expansion of the world’s leading brands in more than 500 locations across Asia.

This is a woman with global vision and the influence to transform the Canadian retail experience.

Timing is EVERYTHING

I’m sure you’ve all met someone at some point in your life where you’ve told yourself, “he/she’s the one”. For some of us, we were right. For most, we were just infatuated by the “idea” of them. The reality is, timing plays a crucial role in where our relationships end up. We might meet a great person at the age of 14 but the chances are we won’t be marrying them. There is too much that will change between that age and maturity that in most cases, they end in heartbreak.

With that being said, you could meet a great person at a point in your life when you’re ready to settle down and start a family and “BAM”, you say your I do’s and get on with it.

Question: Do you think marriage is solely based on love? Or does timing play a bigger role?

Written By: Victoria Ho

We love Sunny. Was anybody surprised?

Let’s just skip over the beginning – you know, where the three finalists Jason Myers, Jessica Biffy and Sunny Fong must step up to the challenge of creating a dress for Cheryl Hickey of ET Canada to wear on the runway. As per usual, Jason defends his design to Brian and Jessica freaks out while Sunny stays as cool as a cucumber. To the runway!
Sunny Fong – Inspiration: Fashion as a Battlefield, Alexander the Great

A mixture of softness with a hard edge, Sunny’s warrior romantic collection had a little something for every fashionista. Every piece was wearable yet chic – from structured jackets with jewelled embroidery, to that gorgeous mauve dress with gold trimming and cut outs, and a python dress with a chiffon drape that was to die for. And who doesn’t love his interpretation of Alexander the Great with his leather and fur pieces? (Okay yeah, PETA wouldn’t, but you can’t win ‘em all!) This consistently creative and innovative designer certainly deserved to win the unanimous vote by all four judges!

Jason Myers – Inspiration: Global glamour, LA highlife cocktail party

Despite his efforts of being “really cohesive,” the judges point out that, again, Jason lacks taste and fails to achieve his intended sophistication and glamour. From the gold sequin overkill to sloppy dresses to the appallingly tight bondage skirt, the only forward piece was the ruffle vest. Evan pretty much summed up Jason’s collection with his brazen remark, “Did you think Playboy Mansion was going to win Project Runway?” (Zing!) And I’m sorry, but how do you manage to make Cheryl Hickey’s hot bod look awful?

Jessica Biffi – Inspiration: Old Hollywood glamour with the swagger of hip hop

Jessica Biffy’s collection brings along some mixed feelings, mostly attributed to the dwindling inconsistency. There were a few amazing pieces and then a few so-so pieces. The attempt at creating a confluence of hip hop and old Hollywood was not really effective and as the judges said, her collection ended up looking like two separate lines. However, when Jessica hits it, she really hits it – especially that purple bohemian chiffon dress with the floral-leopard print, her strong jackets and that gold chain dress I could see Beyonce calling all the single ladies in. Despite a few misses, Jessica has definitely demonstrated her potential and we will hopefully see her work again at next year’s Toronto Fashion Week!

Here at WOT, we too unanimously agreed that Sunny Fong was the most consistent designer throughout the show. It wouldn’t have been a completely disappointing if Jessica took the cake but it wouldn’t have done Sunny any justice as he was clearly the most talented all-round. Talented designers such as these make us look forward to Project Runway Canada 3!!!

Kate Moss and Sir Philip Green have launched the first U.S. Topshop in New York – while perched on top of a pedestal and being sprinkled with confetti.

Their launch party included guests such as Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Hudson, James Blunt, Rosario Dawson, Blondie singer Debbie Harry, Agyness Deyn, Marc Jacobs and Vogue editor Anna Wintour

The odd couple officially opened the doors today to give the American public a chance to see the store which is the favourite of so many women in Britain.

The opening, at 11am New York time, also presented Kate’s own collection, her ninth for Topshop.

The New York store has 200 workers, 32 changing rooms, a DJ booth, and a shoe lounge, but has opened six months late after a series of problems, including construction delays and even flooding .

If the new Topshop proves a success Sir Philip plans to open a second store in Manhattan and eventually to expand to Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Boston.
